Samsung Develops Faster RAM for Mobile Devicesby Steffan On February 23rd, 2012
In the ever –growing smartphone market the focus seems to be on better processors, more storage, finer cameras, and higher definition screens. Today, Samsung reminds us that RAM is also important. The electronics manufacturer announced that it has developed a 4Gb LPDDR3 Dynamic RAM chip for mobile devices.
The new chips are manufactured using a 30nm process and nearly doubles the data speeds of current LPDDR2 solutions while drawing 20 percent less power. Samsung rates the chip at a maximum transfer rate of 1,600 Mbps – about 1.5 times faster than the fastest LPDDR2 chips, which operate at 1,066 Mbps.
Samsung plans to send samples of the chips to key mobile device providers in the next quarter. If all goes well, Samsung wants to have the chips mass produced for use in mobile devices for 2013.
