We’ve seen waterproofing in phones before, either through third party cases or with specially coated and/or ruggedized features, but we haven’t seen anything like superhydrophic coating in phones before. Superhydrophic coating is a special waterproofed coating that repels water, basically causing the water to roll off of any surface it is put on. HzO, one of several hydrophobic coating companies, had a booth at CES this year showing off their coating on smartphones and electronic. HzO stated that Samsung is “really excited” by the technology, and that it is in talks with other manufacturers, like Apple, to have the coating applied to future smartphones.

With a water repellent coating around and in a device, the device could be totally submerged and still work properly. Here are some videos to showcase superhydrophobic coating’s capabilities.
