In case you missed it, Microsoft released the Windows 8 Developer Preview this week. The developer build is set to only develop Windows 8 apps for the future launch. While the build may be intended for developers only, there is a way you can get the Metro style launcher right now for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

If you just can’t wait to get your hands on Windows 8, then we can help you out on achieving the look and feel of the new OS right now. Thanks to Speaker60 and 1000MrCasper there is a open source project that will give you a taste of the Metro Style Launcher from an application called Newgen.

Newgen will give the apperance and somewhat the feel of running the new launcher, but this is not a full OS. This is only an application that will bring the new Metro UI and offer live widgets that will show content not only from your PC but online content as well.

Along with having widgets and content, you are also able to customize the UI to your liking. Everything can be moved, deleted or rearranged to better suit you and your needs. Again while not being a full OS, there is plenty of settings to go through and change to make this UI last until the launch of Windows 8.

Newgen Features:

  • Support for HTML widgets
  • Launch apps and webs in one click
  • Customize as you want
  • Switch to opened apps
  • Play videos, music and pictures without opening them
  • Get tweets, mail and weather report
  • Get updates without the need of navigating to the home website
