Hooking Your Computer to a TV
by Atul On May 31st, 2011Hooking your computer up to a TV is actually a fairly simple project. There are however a few things you will to do before you get started.
#1 Whether you are using a laptop or a desktop computer the steps are relatively the same. You will need to identify what type of output port you have.
#2 You will need to see what input type your TV set has as well. Often times they dont match up(don’t worry though they make every type of cable there is).
#3 Once you have identified the type of output/input you have, you will need to purchase[or borrow from your neighbor
] the correct cable that will connect your computer to your TV(i will get into the types of input/outputs later on in the post).
Once you have identified the type of cable and obtained it you can follow these step-by-step instructions on hooking your computer up to your TV.
HDMI INPUT/OUTPUT HDMI images
- Now-a-days most TVs/Computers have HDMI inputs/outputs on them. This is the easiest way if you happen to have this on your devices.
- Simply hook your HDMI cable to the output on our computer and connect the other end to the HDMI input on your TV set.
- Once you are correctly hooked up you will need to “right click” on your desktop and go to graphics options > output to > television.
- Once you do this you will need to change the “input” selection on your TV to correspond with the correct port you are connected to.
COMPONENT HDMI Component HDMI Images
- Component cables are another form of HDMI for devices that lack the “HDMI” ports so connection is highly similar.
- You will need to plug in each cable of the component cables to the corresponding colors on your TV, generally laptops lack this port, however they make HDMI/Component cables.
- Once you are correctly hooked up you will need to “right click” on your desktop and go to graphics options > output to > television
- Once you do this you will need to change the “input” selection on your TV to correspond with the correct port you are connected to.
RGB CABLE RBG Images
- RGB is the typical output on a computer to monitor basis.
- This is basically the same process as HDMI connection.
- Connect your RGB cable to both your computers output and, your TVs input
- Once you are correctly hooked up you will need to “right click” on your desktop and go to graphics options > output to > television.
- You will need to cycle through your TV’s input settings until you see the correct one.
S-VIDEO CABLE S video Cable Images
- A lot of older model TVs come with this S-Video Cable Port.
- Again the process is very much the same as before.
- You will need to connect both ends of your S-Video Cable to your computer and TV.
- Once you are correctly hooked up you will need to “right click” on your desktop and go to graphics options > output to > television.
- Cycle through your TV’s input settings until you find the correct one.
There are various types of inputs that are not stated here as well. They all follow the same pattern as above.
NOTE: If you have conflicting input/output ports EX. Computer has RGB and TV has S Video input, there are various types of conversion connectors sold at your local department or electronics stores.
-Now you’re in the know
